Gwinnett County Public Schools students outperformed both Georgia and Metro RESA peers on 11 of 13 Georgia Milestones assessments in math, science and social studies for the 2025-26 school year, according to results released by the district Monday.
The strongest pattern is in mathematics. GCPS reported 53% of third graders, 57% of fourth graders, 52% of fifth graders, 49% of sixth graders, 53% of seventh graders and 55% of eighth graders scoring Proficient or Distinguished. In every one of those grades, the GCPS percentage was above both the Metro RESA and statewide figures.
High-school Algebra also came in above comparison groups: 58% of GCPS students scored Proficient or Distinguished, compared with 53% across Metro RESA and 48% statewide. Biology was 51% in GCPS, compared with 50% in Metro RESA and 47% statewide.
Two science measures went the other direction. Only 7% of GCPS students taking the eighth-grade Science End-of-Grade assessment scored Proficient or Distinguished, compared with 30% in both Metro RESA and Georgia. On the Physical Science End-of-Course assessment, GCPS was at 47%, below Metro RESA’s 58% and the state’s 61%.
The eighth-grade comparison needs context. GCPS says 98% of its eighth graders are enrolled in the more rigorous high-school Physical Science course and take that assessment instead of the regular eighth-grade Science EOG. Statewide, 31% of eighth graders take the high-school Physical Science assessment. That means the small group taking the regular eighth-grade science test in Gwinnett is not directly comparable to the full eighth-grade population.
English Language Arts scores are not part of this release. Georgia implemented new ELA standards and new Milestones assessments, and GCPS says those scores are expected later this fall.
What happens next
GCPS plans to present the 2026 Milestones results to the Board of Education during its Aug. 18 work session. For families comparing schools, districtwide results are useful context, but school-level results remain the better tool for understanding performance at a particular campus.
