Gwinnett County’s major-road program contains projects at very different stages, and the difference between “under construction” and “concept” can represent years of work.
The county’s 2023 SPLOST project status sheet, updated as of May 2026, provides a useful snapshot. Because the document is three months old, these should be read as the county’s May statuses rather than a claim that nothing changed by Aug. 29.
Here are five major projects that show the range.
Hamilton Mill Road at I-85 — The interchange project was listed as under construction through the Georgia Department of Transportation, with estimated construction timing shown as mid-2026.
SR 20/Buford Drive — The widening from north of the I-85 interchange to Old Peachtree Road was listed as under construction. The project would widen the corridor from four to six lanes.
SR 20/Grayson Parkway: The widening from Sugarloaf Parkway to Rosebud Road was in right-of-way acquisition, with late 2026 shown in the estimated-construction column.
SR 120/Duluth Highway at SR 316/University Parkway: The proposed interchange was still in the concept stage. That is an early planning status, not a construction commitment.
SR 124/Scenic Highway: The widening from US 78/East Main Street to Sugarloaf Parkway was in design, with late 2029 listed as the estimated construction timing.
Why it matters
Road projects are often discussed long before drivers see construction. The county’s status categories help explain why. A project may move through concept development, design, right-of-way acquisition and other steps before construction begins. Treating every planned improvement as “coming soon” can give residents a distorted picture of when a corridor may actually change.
What happens next
These five projects should now be checked individually for newer milestones. Gwinnett Realty Briefing will treat the May sheet as a baseline and update a project only when a newer county or GDOT source confirms a material change.
