Dr. Mary Kay Murphy Middle School

Dr. Mary Kay Murphy Middle School is a new public middle school under construction in Dacula, Georgia, and is part of the Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) district. The school is scheduled to open in August 2026 and is being built to help relieve overcrowding in the Archer Cluster, serving students in grades 6 through 8.

The school is named after Dr. Mary Kay Murphy, a long-serving and highly respected member of the Gwinnett County Board of Education who spent decades advocating for public education in Gwinnett County. While Dr. Murphy represented the Peachtree Corners and Duluth areas for many years, the school that bears her name is located in northeastern Gwinnett.

The school’s addition is a significant infrastructure investment in a fast-growing part of Gwinnett County. Its opening is expected to ease enrollment pressure, support smaller school populations, and reshape attendance patterns for nearby families.

Note: Because school boundaries can change during the redistricting process, it is best to check the GCPS School Locator or official district updates to confirm specific neighborhood zoning.

Why It Matters (Residents & Real Estate Agents)

New schools usually tell you where the county is feeling growth pressure, and Murphy Middle is a pretty clear sign that northeastern Gwinnett is still booming. For residents, that matters in very practical ways: less crowding, potentially smoother school routines, and—parents can dream—a little less chaos in the day-to-day once boundaries are finalized.

For real estate agents and investors, school openings like this can quietly shift attention from one set of neighborhoods to another. Boundary changes, smaller student populations, and newer facilities tend to catch the eye of family buyers. In other words, this is not just a school story. It is also a watch-the-map-closely story. As GCPS finalizes attendance zones for the 2026–27 school year, neighborhoods feeding into Murphy Middle could start getting a bit more love from buyers who care about school assignments and newer public infrastructure.

Gwinnett County takes its name from Button Gwinnett, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. In Gwinnett Un-Buttoned, we loosen things up a bit and explore the odd, overlooked, and fascinating facts, places, and stories that make Gwinnett more than just another fast-growing county.

Gwinnett is quietly becoming a bit of a powerhouse for the arts. In the December 2025 nomination cycle, three former Gwinnett County Public Schools students were nominated for 2026 GRAMMY Awards.

That is not a coincidence. GCPS has invested heavily in fine arts education, including the School of the Arts (SOTA) at Central Gwinnett High School, along with strong band, orchestra, chorus, and theater programs across the district.

In other words, while Gwinnett is often talked about in terms of growth, roads, and housing, the county is also exporting something less obvious: musicians who end up on the Grammy ballot. Not bad for a suburban school district.
